IF ONLY THEY'D SAID NO...

Clementine is haunted by regret. It was just a barbeque. They didn't even know their hosts that well, they were friends of friends. They could so easily have said no.

But she and her husband Sam said yes, and now they can never change what they did and didn't do that Sunday afternoon.

Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One playful dog. It's an ordinary weekend in the suburbs. What could possibly go wrong?

Marriage, sex, parenthood and friendship: Liane Moriarty takes these elements of our lives and shows us how guilt can expose the fault lines in any relationship, and it is not until we appreciate the fragility of life that we can truly value what we have.

Thrilling, wonderful!

I just loved this book. Had me on my seat the whole time. Great characters and very heartful storyline!

MandyReadsBooks

Slow pace throughout

The plot line was slow to get going and by the time you found out there was something interesting happening (“the barbecue”) you were so far in and invested that you to commit. It was as if the author used the barbecue as click bait to keep you hooked. The plot did circle around nicely in the end. But it was slow and not overly exciting.

Not her best work

Sydneysider and regular on the 'New York Times' Best Seller List. This one was Top Ten the week of release. Her previous books, 'The Husband's Secret' and 'Big Little Lies', both reached Number One. The author dishes out more musings on contemporary Australian suburban life leavened by suspense following an unpleasant incident involving a child at a backyard barbecue. It's a slow-moving, neurotic white middle class version of 'The Slap." Not Morarity's best work.

Cassmed

A little harder to get into

This one was a little harder to get into reading. It was quite sure to start with a lot of random stuff going on. I was surprised by the twist add I always am and then all the random things from throughout the book am pieced together nicely as they always do.

LozB.

Gave me anxiety

Well written and it was enough to finish it but the characters stirred something in my tummy that made me uneasy.

A good read, but not as great as the others

I enjoyed the book but I agree with the reviews that said that it's not as punchy as Liane's other books and the central characters aren't all that relatable. Super happy that I picked it up, the twist was great and unexpected, I laughed out loud a few times, so definitely give it a shot if you're looking for a nice page turning read.

Great read

Loved this story and it's characters! Took m a bit of time to get into it but once again her techniques and writing style keep me hooked!

Kimmee Claire

Not worth the length

I hated the switch between Characters story, it felt unnecessary for what was the climax. Once that hit, i had no reason to read the rest. The characters lacked depth and I could not relate to them. I didn't expect this from the Author. Felt like a rushed book for sales.

So slow

Made it to page 76. Giving up. So dull. Loved her other nooks though.

Thank you!

A well written, beautifully flowing novel I could put down. I particularly enjoyed the complexity the characters and the unfolding of the plot. Thank you!

Rezzie9

Not as good as the others!

I was bored throughout, glad I finished it but it seemed like the author was under the pump to produce something...anything and it wasn't up to her usual quality!

Excellent

I think I've found my new favourite author. I really appreciate the way this book has been written. It started a little slow, but I'm so glad I persisted with it, because I couldn't put it down!

It's worth every minute of frustration!

I found myself yelling at the iPad a third of the way through the 900 odd pages out of pure frustration. The barbecue was dangling continuously just out of reach which led you to believe that if you read one more chapter, the shoe would drop and you'd be in the thick of it! Frustration growing as everyone referred to the "barbecue" (thanks Holly) and the "incident" in their inner dialogue and in their conversations and reading everyone's lives unraveling and not understanding how or why. Then it hits you. When you least expect it. Like a tonne of bricks resting on your chest and you're not able to pinpoint exactly when you started caring so much about each character. You find yourself crying, laughing, arguing with the screen and walking away to "pull yourself together" only to end back up reading again a few minutes later. This book grasps you without you even realising and doesn't let you go. It drops meaningless pieces of information that suddenly tie everything together like shoelace you hadn't realised was undone. Pieces that you thought were purely meaningless conversations and information that carries so much significance in the story that you don't actually know how you missed it and how you missed the weight and significance of them. You are an inspiration Liane. An amazing talent that everyone strives to become. What I'd give to be in your mind for just five minutes. Much love, Xx

The book went no where and left me wondering how I could have persevered for so long... I kept hoping it would improve but it didn't. Weak story, weak characters, overall a huge disappointment.
